Four Places of Truth

In a previous note I wrote about my new note-taking system, Joplin. For years now I’ve been chasing something like a “single point of truth” — one place where everything I write and collect lives.

For a while that was DEVONthink. But now I’m using Windows and Linux machines too, so DEVONthink only runs on my iPad. I don’t want to go back to Evernote and OneNote never quite clicked for me.

Still very happy with Joplin. I’m no longer syncing through my Nextcloud (it died and I can’t resurrect it), but through OneDrive instead. But I’ve got three other containers for information:

  1. Joplin: My first collection point for raw material and research. Markdown text and web clips go here.
  2. GoodNotes: I write and draw a lot with my Apple Pencil. This is also where I push PDFs that I want to read and mark up by hand.
  3. OneDrive: Audio files for podcasts live here, plus my daily voice memos that I either transcribe or keep as idea prompts.
  4. Vimeo: For finished video content. I also download the videos to a massive WD My Passport drive.

Blog content sits on my web server, which I manage through ./deploy from the terminal. At the same time I’m pushing and pulling changes to my own GitTea server.

Four places isn’t one place. But it works.
